My Wife and I have just said goodbye to some lovely house guests.

Joseph Penninger with his wife Liqun and their three beautiful children had a nice visit to Toronto and Quebec.

While they were visiting Quebec, I was commissioned to paint their portraits from photos taken earlier in the week and this was a challenging project.

Here are the results... and YES Joseph's hair really is that crazy!!!!
( perhaps brilliant scientists have so much brain activity their hair grows this way )

I've been working installing a new driveway... finishing my studio and visiting with my Dad (91 years old now)
I haven't even been able to paint outdoors but here are some illustrations I completed recently.

I haven't painted much but I have been creative.

I've spent the better part of the last six months building a studio in the top of our home.
This is what it looked like a little while ago...

And here it is now!!

I've done most of the work myself and hired pros only when I needed them (plumbing and wiring etc).

I now have space aprox 800 square feet where I can paint and hold my classes, including a seperate room for creating digital images for the illustration business. I have my own bathroom with a shower and a kitchen area to make coffee and clean my brushes.

When the snow blows , I can look out the windows watching it cling to big oak limbs while working in the comfort of the studio. In the summer I plan to build a nice deck outside and I can take my coffee out there for a break when I need to.

There are still a lot of finishing details to do but those will happen as I spend more time up here.

Okay ... I've been busy!!!

All my friends are complaining I haven't posted in a while or kept in touch.

This is all my fault I admit but I have been productive. I fell behind my deadline to get the studio completed because one of the guys doing the drywall decided to go missing for a month!!! Imagine.... I was ready to call the police or hospitals to see if he'd met some tragic accident but as it happens he found a better paying job! Of course... that was easy... I am working on a tight budget. Anyhow between that and getting ready for the art tour in our neighborhood this had been a busy few weeks.
Some of my friends are still talking to me so that's good! Those who aren't ... well I won't need to buy as many Christmas gifts so that's not a bad thing.

I had a great art show and the money I made will help pay for my studio renovations. I can't wait to start painting instead of hammering!

I"ve been soooo busy over the last month I haven't even had time to post here!
Here are some Paintings done during my stay in Austria in the Wachau region,
This first one I decided to show the painting and a photo I took of the scene I painted so you can compare the two.

You can see my painting is an impression of the scene... not getting too literal or photographic. There is nothing like painting from life to hone the skill of putting information down quickly without fussing around too much.

I really enjoyed painting alongside Stefan Nuetzel and his students!

I did these two portrait sketches in Stefan's portrait workshop when I visited Vienna in April. Painting in black and white is a great exercise to teach good value control. Painting alongside Stefan is a great exercise to teach good laughter control. We sure worked hard and had fun!

Café Jelinek (Alcove)

Café Jelinek 1060 Wien, Otto-Bauer-Gasse 5

Besides having great home made cake this is one of the most intimate and interesting cafes in Vienna. During the cold months the fireplace in the entrance beckons the weary traveller to sit and relax. Just when the temperature drops and you are about to ask... someone stokes the fire with frsh coal and the fire roars again.

Here is an alcove full of old photos and prints and just waiting for the next patron.

Cafe Hawelka (reading the menu)

This is a painting of old Mr. Hawelka reading his menu. He likes to sit near the entrance on a good day and great people as they come in. He'll beckon them to a table and turn the light on over the table. (when they leave he turns the light off again)

This is the most famous and most photographed cafe in Vienna. Maybe now it is also the most painted cafe too!
This is also a very challenging place to work because it's so dark and the light keeps changing ( Mr. Hawelka keeps playing with the lights). The walls are covered with old posters and photographs and has an authentic Viennese atmosphere.

CAFE TIROLERHOF

This cafe is located at 1010 Wien, Führichgasse 8 across from the Albertina gallery.
This cafe is unique for its windows more than anything.
I think they do well with the crowds that spill out of the gallery across the road. This place doesn't have the same warm interior as many in Vienna but it is grand and well lit. ( a nice change from working in the dark)

Cafe Hawelka

This Is the most photographed (and perhaps now one of the most painted) cafes in Vienna.
The light is so dim I needed to wait for my eyses to adjust before I could start painting. This is a very popular cafe and finding a seat can be a challenge at times. I chose to paint one figure under the light and waited for people to leave to paint the surrounding spaces. This was painted in oil 9 x 12 inches over an oil abstract (left over paint that had dried) so that is why all the warm reds and alizarine colours pop through. I really liked this place in spite of the clouds of cigarette smoke.

Cafe Sperl.

This is one of my favorite cafes in all of Vienna.!!

I painted here on a regular basis. The people who run this place are nice and always had a kind smile for me.
The deserts were terrific too and I recommend this cafe to anyone visiting Vienna.
This painting will be shown in my upcoming exhibition in Vienna and I will have more information later.

Here's another painting I did just a few months back.

I will be be featuring paintings of cafes up until my show in Vienna in May since I seem to be so busy with illustration work I can hardly get to painting anything else!! (I'm not complaining it does help pay the bills)

Speaking of Illustrations.... Here's a sample of the other things I do (little people are easier to paint than big ones)

This image was constructed entirely on the computer using parts of older illustrations in combination with a computer paint program. The world is changing!!

Memories of 2006 (Revue Theatre)

The year has come to a close and there are many memories connected with it. Time passes quickly and as we get older the perception is that time passes even faster than before. I am one of the lucky ones during this passage of time, being able to do the things I love and to be creative.

Here is a memory of a great old theatre in our neighborhood that sadly in this last year closed down. I painted this on the spot during the Roncesvalles street festival and this was my way of capturing memories of attending this place. Sometimes the end of one great thing is the beginning of another.
Perhaps in 2007 we will see some new hope for this piece of history.

I know it's winter now... but here are a couple of fall memories. These are both from High Park just a few minutes walk from home.

The first one is 16 x 20 inches and the second one is 9 x 12 inches. Both oil on board they were painted on the spot.

When I can... I like to paint from life at a great art group here in Toronto. These paintings are small (9 x 12 inches) and
completed in about an hour and a half to two hours.

The reason you are seeing so much texture in this first one, is because I painted over
an old landscape painting that I didn't care for much.

Here's a pen and ink drawing of a banana tree I did sitting in my brother and law's garden in India (two weeks ago)

I started in the middle without any preliminary pencil drawing and just worked my way out. Silly really because drawing this way becomes an exercise in total concentration and there is a real danger of slipping up along the way.

I was lucky this time and everything ended up in the right proportion.

This was a commission and I enjoyed painting this one. There were more tourists than I've ever seen in one place but this sculpture is outside Vienna's main art gallery.. so that is to be expected.

I met a couple of other artists while I painted this today. One was Daniel Friedemann Fuchs ... he had a couple of helpful suggestions about my painting and seemed like a decent fella. You can see his work here...

Old Coffee Urn

The waiter wasn't very pleased I moved THREE times in order to get the right table to paint this one. Oh well ... the place was almost empty most the time and I think it gave hime something to complain about. this is one of a few old relics that find shelf space at Cafe Diglas in Vienna.

This is a common scene at Cafe Jelinek. This older gentleman didn't move too much as I painted furiously to capture the moment. The wait staff are great here and I always feel welcomed in spite of all my painting stuff!

Cafe Hawelka Mirror (SOLD)

Here is yet another cafe Hawelka painting.
That is Mr. Hawelka sitting under the light reading his newspaper.
He kept moving around so I just managed to capture the basic shape of a person sitting and so it looks like he could be anyone!

He is in the habit of turning the lights out when anyone leaves so I was lucky to capture the light on over the mirror! I don't think he noticed it because he was around the corner.

First Time Ever!! (SOLD)

I actually sold this painting on the spot in cafe Braunerhof
(Thomas Bernhard's favourite cafe in Vienna)
The Gentleman in the painting was sitting in Bernhard's favorite spot as it happens and He is also the proud new owner of the original.

I have painted in the cafes for almost two and a half years and this really is my first on the spot purchase.... there is hope for me yet..!!

Cafe Westend Vienna Austria

This is a tiny little painting... 5 x 7 inches painted wet in wet.
